Zuarungu SHS shut down after violent student clash; Four arrested, one escapes with Police rifle magazine

The decision to close the school was made by the Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Donatus Akamugri Atanga, to prevent a further escalation of the unrest.

Zuarungu Senior High School, in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region, has been shut down indefinitely following violent clashes between rival student groups on Sunday, July 20.

The decision to close the school was made by the Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Donatus Akamugri Atanga, to prevent a further escalation of the unrest.

The clashes, reportedly triggered by the alleged theft of a mobile phone, quickly spiraled into a large-scale brawl.

The violence led to significant destruction of school property, including the burning of some school structures.

Security sources confirmed to Mike News that four students were arrested in connection with the incident.

However, in a dramatic twist, one of the suspects escaped custody while being transported to the police station. During the escape, the suspect allegedly made away with a police officer’s rifle magazine, prompting an urgent manhunt by authorities.

In response to the unrest and rising tensions, a joint police and military task force has been deployed to the school.

Their immediate task is to oversee the safe evacuation of students, particularly those from conflict-prone areas such as Bawku. Authorities emphasized that these escorted transfers are precautionary, aimed at preventing possible reprisal attacks.

The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has called for calm and urged all stakeholders—including students, parents, and community leaders—to cooperate fully as efforts to restore peace and order continue.
