President Mahama announces plans to rescope Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project
He said government would conduct a fresh appraisal of the project’s cost and begin implementation in phases to ensure feasibility
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government will rescope and revive the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project, with financing to be secured under the Big Push initiative.
The President made this known during the Presidential Media Encounter held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, September 10, in response to a question from Mike FM’ David Adapuna, Navrongo, on his plans for the abandoned project.
“We are rescoping the project. The contract was awarded to Sinohydro, but it was supposed to be funded from Government of Ghana sources. Government of Ghana didn’t have the money, and so the contract was not executed,” President Mahama explained.
He said government would conduct a fresh appraisal of the project’s cost and begin implementation in phases to ensure feasibility.
“The last time, it was supposed to cost close to a billion dollars, which today would amount to about ¢12 billion. This year, the total budget for the Big Push is about ¢14 billion, and next year it will be ¢30 billion. We will see how we can accommodate the dam in phases,” he noted.
According to him, Phase One will focus on electricity generation, while Phase Two will address flood control and irrigation.
“So, you will soon hear something about it,” the President assured, stressing the project’s importance to the economic transformation of northern Ghana.
The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, first initiated under the NPP’s administration, is considered a landmark project expected to provide renewable energy, improve irrigation for agriculture, and reduce perennial flooding in the northern sector.
