Rival driver unions clash at Navrongo main lorry station: What we know so far
Eyewitnesses gave accounts that members of the Dizenedane Drivers Association forcibly sacked GPRTU vehicles from the station and blocked the main entrance with their cars, effectively halting transport operations and stranding several passengers.
Chaos broke out at the Navrongo Main Lorry Station this morning following what nearly became a violent standoff between members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Dizenedane Drivers Association, both operating in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, members of the Dizenedane Drivers Association forcibly sacked GPRTU vehicles from the station and blocked the main entrance with their cars, effectively halting transport operations and stranding several passengers.

The confrontation stems from a long-standing leadership dispute within the GPRTU Navrongo branch. It is alleged that in 2023, a faction of disgruntled members rejected the results of a GPRTU leadership election and subsequently broke away to form the Dizenedane Drivers Association.
Sources say the aggrieved group took the matter to court, challenging the legitimacy of the election results. The case is still pending judgment.

Today’s escalation is believed to be linked to frustrations over the delayed ruling. Police were reportedly called to the scene to restore calm and prevent further clashes, though tension remains high between the two groups.
Passengers who arrived at the lorry station early Tuesday morning were left stranded, with many expressing disappointment over the disruption of transport services.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
