NPP’s Jacob Asomadawine says petition against Dr Bawumia is out of hate
The petition calls for the OSP to investigate former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, and breaches of Ghana’s political financing laws.
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team for the Navrongo Central Constituency, Jacob Asomadawine, has dismissed a petition submitted by Solomon Owusu of the Movement for Change to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing it as one born out of hatred and personal interest.
The petition calls for the OSP to investigate former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, and breaches of Ghana’s political financing laws.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday September 22, Asomadawine argued that political fundraising is a normal practice in Ghana and questioned why Dr Bawumia’s case should be treated differently. He suggested the petition was motivated by political rivalry rather than genuine concern for accountability.
“If a fundraising ceremony was organised and people donated, and Bawumia at the end of the day gives the proceeds of the fundraising to the party, someone has a concern? You know why he is doing this, it is because Dr Bawumia came and ended the political career of Alan Cash.” Asomadawine claimed.
He further alleged that members of the Movement for Change, including its founder Alan Kyerematen, are targeting Dr Bawumia because of his strong political prospects.
“The most experienced politician now aside Mahama is Bawumia, so he knows that where the guy is going, the NPP may claim power again in 2028. He is being paid to do this, and it is not good at all,” he added.
While insisting he does not oppose accountability in politics, Asomadawine maintained that the petition does not serve that purpose and is instead an act of political mischief.
