A Nurse and Disease Control Officer, Rockson Ajongba, has urged individuals and couples to patronise family planning services, stressing that available methods are safe and effective for achieving planned and healthy families.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday January 13, Ajongba said family planning plays a critical role in promoting maternal and child health, enabling families to make prudent use of limited economic resources, and supporting well-planned lives.
He noted that fears and negative perceptions surrounding family planning largely stem from misconceptions and inadequate public education.
“Some of the concerns are born out of misconceptions. Family planning methods do not permanently prevent a woman from conceiving once she stops using them. However, with some methods, it may take a little time after discontinuation before pregnancy occurs.” He explained.
He also advised couples experiencing challenges with conception to seek proper medical attention rather than resorting to assumptions or unverified remedies that may not address the real problem.
“Sometimes a man may accuse or fight with a woman because she is not conceiving. This is not a spiritual issue; it is a health issue. In some cases, the man may have a low sperm count, and unless that is addressed, pregnancy will not occur.” He said.
Ajongba emphasised that without proper medical examination to determine the cause of infertility, couples risk “fighting the wrong battle and called on the public to take advantage of professional health services for accurate diagnosis and guidance.
