Unconditional love must extend beyond romance – Rev. Thomas Bajaba
Rev. Bajaba emphasized that love should not be conditional or transactional but rooted in commitment and selflessness.
Rev. Thomas Bajaba, a Senior Pastor of Ambassador Assemblies of God Church in Navrongo has called for a redefinition of Valentine’s Day celebrations, urging people to embrace unconditional love that goes beyond romantic relationships to include compassion, sacrifice, and care for the vulnerable.
Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM on February 14, Rev. Bajaba emphasized that love should not be conditional or transactional but rooted in commitment and selflessness.
“Unconditional love means I care about you even when we disagree, even when you mess up, and even when things are not perfect. My love is not a reward, it is a commitment.” Bajaba stated.
He explained that the celebration of February 14 as a day of love must move beyond surface-level expressions often limited to romantic partners and instead reflect inclusive and pure love that uplifts others, especially those who cannot repay kindness.
“The attitude of this generation towards Valentine celebration must be redefined. Love must be shown to the vulnerable and those that cannot pay you back. Love must be unconditional and not self-seeking.” He said.
Rev. Bajaba further stressed that love must extend to communities, noting that genuine care and compassion can help address social challenges such as child neglect, abuse, and depression.
He acknowledged that relationships often face difficulties, including communication breakdowns, trust issues, and financial pressures, but encouraged individuals to intentionally nurture their relationships through attention and quality time.
Also contributing to the discussion, Stephen Nyarkoh a Registrar at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences School of Nursing and Midwifery emphasized that Valentine’s Day should focus on the recipient of love rather than the person expressing it.
“Valentine is a day we celebrate love and it is dependent on the one who is celebrating it, how they understand and express that love. However, for me, love is giving and giving it even to the undeserving.” He said.

Nyarkoh noted that true love is not only expressed when circumstances are perfect but is most evident during difficult moments marked by offences and shortcomings. He added that showing kindness, mercy, and support to those in need reflects the true essence of love.
He highlighted agape love as the foundation upon which all other forms of love should be built, describing it as the only form capable of enduring the test of time.
Nyarkoh also underscored the importance of communication in sustaining healthy relationships, stressing that individuals must clearly express their expectations to prevent misunderstandings among friends, families, and couples.
