NPP’s Ayivere questions timing of legal challenges against OSP powers

He questioned the timing of the legal challenges against the Office of the Special Prosecutor, suggesting the dispute may be politically motivated.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Benjamin Ayivere Wedam, has described the ongoing legal dispute over the prosecutorial powers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as politically motivated.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday April 22, he questioned why concerns about the OSP’s prosecutorial authority are only surfacing years after the office was established.

“I blame we the citizens. The OSP was not created this year; it was established back in 2017. Those filing petitions or court cases were in Ghana at the time, so why now?” He asked.

Ayivere suggested that some politically exposed persons may be seeking to undermine or remove the current Special Prosecutor for personal reasons.

He further claimed that most of the recent controversies surrounding the OSP began after the arrest of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu.

“Let’s be realistic. This brouhaha started when Martin Kpebu was arrested. Some people don’t even understand why the OSP would arrest or attempt to detain him.” He alleged.

Ayivere emphasized that the Office of the Special Prosecutor should be allowed to carry out its mandate without interference.
