NPP brought real change to Basic Education in Ghana — Maxwell Akunyire

NPP transformed basic education in Ghana — Akunyire

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Maxwell Akunyire, has praised his party’s contribution to the development of basic education in Ghana, describing it as transformative.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, May 6, Akunyire said the NPP has implemented far-reaching reforms that have significantly improved the sector since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

“The facts are there for Ghanaians to see who truly brought real change to basic education in the country,” he stated.

He highlighted key interventions such as curriculum reforms, the introduction of capitation grants, the expansion of the School Feeding Programme, and sustained teacher training initiatives as major milestones achieved under successive NPP administrations.

Akunyire also credited the party with strengthening early childhood education, noting that the introduction and expansion of the preschool system have helped lay a solid foundation for learners before they enter primary school.

“The NPP prioritised early childhood education to ensure that young learners are adequately prepared before beginning primary school,” he added.

In comparing the NPP’s record with that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Akunyire argued that the latter’s contribution to the sector falls short.

He further accused the NDC of implementing policies that, in his view, created challenges for stakeholders in the education sector, citing the cancellation of teacher trainee allowances during a previous NDC administration.

“During President John Mahama’s first term, teacher trainees’ allowances were cancelled, and teachers faced significant resource constraints, including a lack of basic teaching materials,” he claimed.
