Ali Moro calls for renewed commitment to Nkrumah’s vision of African Unity

Governance advocate pushes for stronger intra-African trade, common currency, and collective development agenda to drive continental progress

Political commentator and governance enthusiast Ali Moro has called on African leaders to revive the vision of continental unity championed by African icons such as Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Haile Selassie, and Nelson Mandela.

According to him, these leaders believed Africa could achieve sustainable development and self-reliance through greater unity, cooperation, and collective action among its nations.

Speaking on the need for stronger African integration during an appearance on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 26, Moro said the continent possesses the natural resources, human capital, and economic potential required to chart its own development path if leaders work together towards a common objective.

He stressed the need for African countries to prioritize intra-African trade rather than maintaining excessive dependence on foreign markets and external partners.

“If we begin to think as Africans, trade among ourselves, communicate effectively with one another, and pursue common goals, we can build a stronger continent.”

“African currencies remain weak partly because we operate independently. We need common plans and stronger economic integration to enhance our collective strength,” he said.

Moro argued that the fragmentation of African economies, characterized by multiple currencies and differing economic systems, has contributed to the weakness of many national currencies across the continent.

He therefore advocated the establishment of a strong common African currency, which he believes would facilitate trade, strengthen economic stability, and deepen regional integration.

The political enthusiast further emphasized the need for African nations to adopt shared development policies and long-term strategies that promote collective growth and prosperity.

He noted that the vision espoused by Africa’s founding fathers was intended to secure both the political and economic independence of the continent and position Africa as a formidable force in global affairs.

Moro added that a renewed commitment to the ideals of unity, cooperation, and self-determination would enable African countries to tackle persistent challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment.

“If African leaders embrace the spirit of unity and cooperation championed by our founding fathers, the continent will be better positioned to create jobs, reduce poverty, and compete effectively with other regions of the world in the global economy,” he stated.

He urged policymakers across the continent to place African interests at the center of development planning and work collectively towards realizing the long-held dream of a united, prosperous, and self-sufficient Africa.
