NPP’s New Upper East Executives won’t change party’s fortunes –Jonathan Abdallah
Jonathan Abdallah Salifu questions the capacity of the newly elected NPP regional leadership to reverse the party’s electoral fortunes, saying the NDC remains confident ahead of the 2028 elections.
Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, has dismissed the prospects of the newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) Regional Executives, saying they will struggle to change the party’s electoral fortunes in the region ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Salifu said the new executives largely comprise familiar faces whose previous performances, in his view, do not give the NDC sufficient reason to be concerned about the NPP’s preparations for the next elections.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Mike FM on Tuesday, August 18, he congratulated the NPP for conducting what he described as a peaceful internal election but immediately questioned what the new leadership would bring to the party.
“Just that the people they elected will not bring anything new to the table,” he said.
Salifu cited the electoral performance of some of the newly elected executives in their respective areas as evidence that they had yet to demonstrate the capacity to significantly improve the NPP’s fortunes.
He questioned the choice of some of the executives, arguing that previous positions held within the party did not automatically translate into the ability to deliver electoral victories.
The NDC communicator further argued that the new leadership lacked the experience required to reverse what he described as the NPP’s poor electoral performance in the Upper East Region.
“This team is very weak. Right from the head to the bottom. Very weak,” Salifu said.
He said he did not expect the new executives to pose a serious threat to the NDC in the 2028 general elections.
Salifu also criticised what he described as the geographical concentration of some key positions within the NPP’s new regional executive, contrasting it with what he said was broader regional representation within the NDC’s leadership.
According to him, the NDC’s leadership structure is deliberately spread across the Eastern, Central and Western blocks of the region to help mobilise support effectively across constituencies.
He maintained that the NDC was therefore not intimidated by the NPP’s stated intention to unite its ranks, reclaim parliamentary seats and challenge the NDC in 2028.
“Oh, we are always ready for them,” he said.
Salifu added that the NDC would remain focused on consolidating its position in the region and would not be distracted by the NPP’s claims that it had begun preparations to regain political power.
