UTAS SRC constructs GH¢30,000 culvert to improve movement on campus

The student-led project is aimed at improving mobility and reducing difficulties caused by flooding, particularly for students and staff accessing parts of the UTAS campus during the rainy season.

The 2025/2026 outgoing leadership of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University for Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo, has constructed a culvert valued at more than GH¢30,000 to improve movement within the university campus.

The student-driven project was commissioned on Tuesday, August 18, during a handing-over ceremony at which the outgoing executives officially transferred the affairs of the SRC to the newly elected leadership.

Speaking at the commissioning, the outgoing SRC President, Alhassan Abdulai, who led the initiative, said the culvert was the first of its kind undertaken by the student leadership to address a major mobility challenge on campus.

He explained that several areas around the university were prone to flooding during the rainy season, making movement difficult for students and staff.

“If you look at the nature of our campu many areas that are river sites. It serves the Ladies’ Hall, the mosque, the Catholic Church and other non-residential hostels up there. Whenever it rains, they find it difficult to cross and come to campus,” he said.

Abdulai said the SRC therefore identified the need to construct the culvert to provide a safer and more convenient route for students and staff, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

“So we saw the necessity of constructing this culvert to serve our students and staff as well,” he added.

Beyond the culvert project, Abdulai said his administration had undertaken several other initiatives aimed at improving the academic environment and welfare of students.

He disclosed that the SRC had contracted 20 dual desks comprising chairs and tables to provide additional learning spaces for students.

The outgoing SRC also procured a motorbike and 14 air-conditioning units, among other interventions, which Abdulai said were intended to improve student welfare and enhance the learning environment on campus.

The projects form part of the outgoing administration’s broader efforts to address practical challenges confronting students and leave behind tangible assets for future SRC administrations.
