NPP National Executives Elections will enhance internal party democracy – Communicators
NPP and NDC communicators say the election of effective national leaders could strengthen opposition politics and contribute to Ghana’s democratic development.
Political party communicators in the Chiana-Paga and Navrongo Central Constituencies have expressed positive expectations about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executives Elections, saying the exercise will strengthen internal party democracy and contribute to Ghana’s democratic development.
The elections, scheduled for Saturday, October 3, form part of the NPP’s broader reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, October 2, a member of the NPP Communications Team in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Maxwell Akunyire, said the party’s reorganisation process had already resulted in the election of its flagbearer as well as constituency and regional executives, with the national executives’ elections being the next stage.
He said the exercise was aimed at building a strong and united party capable of challenging the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
“We want a solid party, one with unity of purpose that will lead us to victory.”
Akunyire called on all party members to unite after the elections and work together towards rebuilding the party and achieving its objectives.
He said the outcome of the elections was important not only to NPP members but to the wider Ghanaian public, arguing that a strong opposition party was essential to the country’s democratic development.
“The election of our national executives is very dear to all Ghanaians, not just the NPP, because Ghanaians want the party back to power.”
However, a member of the NDC Communications Team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Thomas Akwolaga, said the NPP’s national elections were important because they could help produce leaders capable of providing a responsible and constructive opposition.
He said an NPP leadership that offered alternative policy proposals, ideas and constructive criticism would ultimately benefit both the NDC government and the country as a whole.
“If they elect leaders who are constructive and will be able to give policy options, ideas and constructive criticism, it will be to the benefit of all Ghanaians and the NDC government.”
While wishing the NPP success in the elections, Akwolaga disagreed with the suggestion that the exercise alone could change the party’s electoral fortunes in the 2028 general elections.
He argued that voters would assess the broader impact of the government in power on their lives, rather than base their decision solely on the leadership elected by the opposition party.
Akwolaga expressed confidence that the NDC would retain power in the next general elections, citing what he described as the positive impact of the government’s policies on the lives of Ghanaians.
“The NDC is sure to remain in power in the next elections because Ghanaians have seen the impact of the government in their lives.”
