Sexual abuse is barbaric and must be eradicated – NDC Communicator

Lawyer Ateiweh Tigura calls for the eradication of sexual abuse in schools, urging accountability for offenders and stronger protection for students.

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team in Navrongo Central, Lawyer Ateiweh Tigura has condemned sexual abuse in schools, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable.

His comments follow allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), as contained in an investigative documentary.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday October 23, Lawyer Tigura said sexual abuse must be condemned unequivocally and eradicated from Ghana’s social fabric, particularly when it involves people in positions of influence.

According to him, it is unacceptable for individuals entrusted with the responsibility of educating and mentoring young people to exploit those under their care.

He described such conduct as barbaric and incompatible with the values of a decent society, stressing that people in positions of authority have a responsibility to protect, guide and mentor young people rather than take advantage of them.

Lawyer Tigura maintained that if investigations establish that the headmaster sexually abused any student, even a single victim, he must be held accountable under the law.

He cautioned that society must not treat allegations of sexual abuse lightly, warning that anyone’s daughter or sister could become a victim if such conduct is tolerated.

According to him, the fight against sexual abuse must begin with a firm societal commitment to reject such acts, given their far-reaching implications for individuals, families and society as a whole.

Lawyer Tigura further highlighted the psychological and emotional consequences of sexual abuse, particularly among children, noting that victims often endure significant trauma and may require counselling, support and encouragement to recover.

He called for a society that prioritises the protection of children and ensures that perpetrators of sexual abuse are held accountable when found culpable.
