C.K Tedam University NUGS organises hands-on science and ICT training for JHS students

The initiative offered hands-on experience in biology, chemistry, and computer science, providing students with their first exposure to practical science and technology in a tertiary-level environment.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) has organised a one-day practical learning programme for Junior High School (JHS) students within the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, aimed at bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.

The event, held on the university’s campus on June 27, brought together students from several basic schools across the municipality for interactive sessions in the university’s science and ICT laboratories. The initiative offered hands-on experience in biology, chemistry, and computer science, providing students with their first exposure to practical science and technology in a tertiary-level environment.

Speaking to Mike FM, the Secretary of NUGS at CKT-UTAS, Ibrahim Abdui Rahman, highlighted the significance of the outreach.

“The main motive of this outreach is to give these students firsthand practicals in science such as chemistry and biology, as well as ICT, and a mentorship session just to introduce them, especially some of them for the first time, to these practicals instead of just the theories they learn in the classroom,” he explained.

The programme also included mentoring sessions where university students interacted with the pupils, encouraging them to pursue education in STEM-related fields.

Students who took part in the programme expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity.

“I am honored to be chosen to be part of these practicals because in school we just do the theoretical aspect. So, me being chosen to come here, I’ll be able to see some of the things I would have never seen back at school,” said Kaba Almiea, a student from OLL Girls JHS.

“Speaking for my school and myself, I hope that this event will teach us a lot of things that may help us in our basic lives and also in our future,” added Ezra Achana from Fast Link Academy.

Teachers who accompanied the students commended the initiative. Elizabeth Akwanapaba, a teacher from Balobia JHS, described the event as a very educative programme and emphasized its potential impact on student motivation and academic performance.

“I think the children will have firsthand information from this experience, and it will encourage them to take science and ICT lessons more seriously,” she noted.

NUGS at CKT-UTAS says it plans to continue such outreach efforts to support basic education and inspire the next generation of scientists and technologists from the Upper East Region.
