The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) says it has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), ahead of a deadline agreed between the government and teacher unions.
In a press release dated October 15, the department said 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, alongside their October salaries, covering salary adjustments and arrears from January 1, 2026.
A further 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026.
The payments were completed ahead of the October 16 deadline agreed upon by government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2.
According to the CAGD, the GES reported that about 80,000 teachers had been promoted. However, the Service processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633 teachers for verification and payment.
Of that number, the CAGD verified and paid 56,003 teachers, while 630 cases remain pending due to issues identified during the verification process.
The department said it was awaiting the resolution of the outstanding issues by the GES before the affected teachers could be paid.
It further disclosed that the remaining 23,367 promoted teachers were yet to be processed, with the relevant supporting documents still to be submitted by the GES.
The CAGD assured that it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met the required payroll standards, adding that it remained committed to processing outstanding eligible payments once the necessary corrections were made or complete and accurate documents were received and verified.
The department thanked the GES, teacher unions, and participating ministries and agencies for their cooperation in facilitating the payment process.
