Counsellor warns against procrastination, says it undermines personal progress

The Lead Counsellor at Eleos Counselling Consult, Samuel Gyamfi, has cautioned individuals against procrastination, describing it as a subtle but destructive habit that can derail personal growth and productivity in 2026.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, January 5, Gyamfi noted that procrastination often robs people of valuable time without them realising it.
“Procrastination comes in statements like, ‘I will do it tomorrow,’ ‘I will start next year,’ or ‘I will begin at the end of the month,’” he explained.
“Before you realise it, January turns into June, and suddenly you are in September with nothing meaningful accomplished.”
He described the habit as particularly dangerous because it disguises itself as delay rather than failure, gradually stealing time that could be invested in growth, learning, and achievement.
On how to break unhealthy habits, Gyamfi outlined a practical approach that begins with self-assessment. According to him, individuals must first identify and understand how a habit operates in their lives, then consciously reject the thoughts that trigger the behaviour.
“When you negate the thought behind the habit, you create a sense of rejection that prevents you from acting it out.” He said.
“Setting clear goals also helps to shift your focus away from the habit and encourages the development of healthier routines.”
He further urged listeners to establish firm personal boundaries to support the goals they set for the year, stressing the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline.
“Set boundaries and create self-awareness,” he advised. “If you set a goal, ask yourself what you are doing to achieve it. When the temptation comes, stick to the boundaries you have created.”
“You must become your own police officer and pastor, constantly reminding yourself not to go down that path.”
