Ghana Museums Board retracts false Virgin Mary claim; apologises to UG Prof. Apoh

Museums Board withdraws viral claim and apologises for misattributing statement to Prof. Apoh

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has officially retracted a widely circulated claim that the Virgin Mary lived in Ghana for 40 years and has issued an unreserved apology to Prof. Wazi Apoh of the University of Ghana.

In a formal letter dated April 30, 2026, the Board acknowledged that the claim originated from a false statement made by a security officer who acted as a tour guide at the Ho Regional Museum.

The statement, which alleged that Mary, the mother of Jesus, lived in the Volta Region for four decades, was wrongly attributed to Prof. Apoh.

The GMMB clarified that following an internal investigation, it found no evidence that Prof. Apoh had ever made such a claim, either in public or in his academic publications.

“GMMB wishes to retract the said statement in its entirety and extend its sincere apologies to Prof. Wazi Apoh for the misattribution.” The letter stated.

The controversy gained traction after a viral video filmed at the museum suggested that research by the respected archaeologist supported the claim.

However, Prof. Apoh had earlier dismissed the assertion, stressing that his work particularly his long-standing research in the Volta Region contains no evidence linking the Virgin Mary to Ghana.
