Gov’t appointees to Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly protest sudden replacement
At a press conference on May 5th, 2025, shortly after the failed confirmation of Faustina Akeyom Abulu, the assembly members who had been accused of orchestrating her failure, denied any involvement and cited a multitude of concerns believed to have influenced the nominee’s loss.
A group of aggrieved government appointees who had previously been appointed to the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, have vehemently protested their abrupt replacement ahead of the scheduled confirmation of Faustina Akeyom Abulu, the Chief Executive (MCE) on June 16, 2025.
The appointees, led by Adoah Michael Chanyere, expressed deep disappointment over what they describe as an unjustifiable and undemocratic move to swear in a new set of government appointees without prior notice, consultation, or explanation.
In the strongly worded statement, the group questioned the rationale behind the sudden changes, noting that none of the current appointees had been accused of misconduct or disloyalty.
They insist that they have carried out their duties with diligence and loyalty to both the government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and see the decision as a betrayal of their hard work and grassroots sacrifices.
“Why is there a sudden invitation to swear in new government appointees at this critical point, especially when a similar exercise has already been conducted with no justifiable cause for annulment or replacement?” the statement asked.
The appointees argue that the move violates provisions of the Local Government Act 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940, which calls for inclusiveness and consultation in the selection of government appointees. They allege that the current MCE nominee has bypassed party structures and legal protocols by handpicking preferred individuals for appointment.
The group is, therefore, demanding an immediate explanation for their replacement, suspension of the new appointments and swearing-in, and an urgent intervention from key party stakeholders including the National Chairman, Regional Chairman, Regional Minister, and Member of Parliament.
They warned that failure to address the issue could damage the party’s unity and electoral chances in the constituency.
“These abrupt and unexplained changes are sowing confusion and resentment among the rank and file of our party,” the statement reads. “This could deeply harm our chances in future elections.”
Recall
At a press conference on May 5th, 2025, shortly after the failed confirmation of Faustina Akeyom Abulu, the assembly members who had been accused of orchestrating her failure, denied any involvement and cited a multitude of concerns believed to have influenced the nominee’s loss.
Prominent among those were allegations of Abulu’s poor conduct, perceived lack of qualification for the role, and accusations of political favoritism that circumvented established procedures.
The assembly members alleged that Abulu displayed inappropriate behavior during the nomination period, including disrespect towards colleagues, a focus on internal conflict rather than consensus-building, selective engagement, and an attitude of entitlement.
