Link Ghana, Fisheries Commission honour fisherfolks in Kassena-Nankana on Farmers’ Day

According to the Project Coordinator of Link Ghana, Daniel Kansake, the awards form part of the organisation’s commitment to promote aquaculture and motivate farmers who have shown dedication to fish production.

Link Ghana, in partnership with the Fisheries Commission, has honoured hardworking fish and vegetable farmers in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality and Kassena-Nankana West District as part of this year’s Farmers’ Day celebrations.

According to the Project Coordinator of Link Ghana, Daniel Kansake, the awards form part of the organisation’s commitment to promote aquaculture and motivate farmers who have shown dedication to fish production.

These awards are meant to motivate and encourage the farmers to continue to do more in fish production.” He said.

As part of the initiative, the Bonia Women’s Group was recognised for its commitment to fish farming. The group received a pumping machine and a bag of fish feed to support its operations, particularly in pumping water from the canal into their pond.

In the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, Delphina Apewe Demara was named the Best Fish Farmer based on her impressive output. Data from the Fisheries Commission indicates that she produces one metric tonne of fish per cycle, amounting to two metric tonnes annually.

To encourage and strengthen her work, she was presented with a bag of fish feed, a basin, a fish harvesting net, a pick axe, a catalyst and wellington boots.

In the Kassena-Nankana West District, the Kajelo Women’s Group, which is engaged in both vegetable and fish production, was also rewarded for its dedication. The group received a pumping machine and two bags of fish feed to support irrigation and improve productivity.

Reacting to the recognition, the leader of the Kajulo Women’s Group expressed gratitude to Link Ghana for the support and training they have received over the years.

“We stock, we harvest, we sell and we restock again. Today, we are very happy that we have been recognised on Farmers’ Day. The water pumping machine will support our vegetable farm and the fish feed will help in our fish production.” She said.

Kansake also underscored the importance of local fish production for food safety and public health.

“Fish farming is the best way to go, because unlike imported frozen fish, we know how our fish is produced and how fresh it is.” He stressed.

He further encouraged other NGOs, development partners and district assemblies to support local aquaculture initiatives, noting that such interventions can improve livelihoods and strengthen food security in the region.
