NADMO committed to making Upper East disaster free – Regional Director assures

Upper East Region remains one of the most disaster-prone areas in the country, with perennial flooding, windstorms, and the annual Bagre Dam spillage posing major challenges.

The Upper East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Rebecca Asibi Akolgo, has reiterated the organisation’s commitment to making the region safe and resilient against disasters.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, August 25, Akolgo said the Upper East Region remains one of the most disaster-prone areas in the country, with perennial flooding, windstorms, and the annual Bagre Dam spillage posing major challenges.

NADMO in the Upper East Region is trying its best to ensure that the region becomes a disaster-free zone. When you compare the region to other regions, you’ll realise that it is more prone to disasters like flooding, windstorms and the likes.” She said.

She explained that NADMO is intensifying sensitisation efforts through the media and other platforms while putting in place effective mechanisms to mitigate the impact of disasters on communities.

On the issue of the Bagre Dam spillage, which has become an annual occurrence affecting lives and livelihoods in the region, Akolgo called for renewed attention to the construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam.

“If government intervenes and works on the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, it will go a long way to prevent issues of drowning and flooding when it comes to this time. If the dam is activated, it will also help a lot of our farmers.” She noted.

The Regional Director appealed to residents of the region to support NADMO’s efforts by adhering to safety advisories and cooperating with the organisation during emergencies.
