Navrongo Seventh-Day Adventist Church advocates for care for the aged

The Navrongo branch of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has undertaken a street evangelism exercise to campaign for elderly care in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.
The campaign formed part of the Church’s observance of Women’s Emphasis Day -a day set aside for the women’s ministry to lead evangelism programs.
The event, held on Saturday, August 23, began at the Church auditorium with an exhortation to members on the need to care for the elderly, stressing the vulnerability of the aged.
This was followed by a street float through the principal streets of Navrongo, where church members shared flyers with the public and displayed placards bearing advocacy messages such as: “Every elderly person deserves respect, care and compassion,” “Old age is not by choice,” and “Elderly abuse is a crime.”

Lilian Yiryuo, District Women’s Leader of the SDA Church in Navrongo, urged the public to extend support to the aged, emphasising that old age comes with unique challenges.
“At this stage in their lives, it’s special in a way because they have a lot of wisdom, but it also comes with many challenges, physically, financially, and psychologically. They need the youth or anyone who can extend a helping hand, because there are many things they are unable to do, not by choice, but because of their old age.” She said.

Edith Nchor, the local Women’s Ministry Leader, lamented the neglect of the elderly, citing instances where they are left to struggle alone.
“In Navrongo, when you go to the market squares, you see elderly people hawking just to feed themselves. At the hospital where I work, you see elderly women come unaided to seek help. All these are disheartening.” She fumed.

The Church reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of the community, stressing that scripture demands care for the vulnerable. It pledged to continue being a voice for the marginalized in society.
