NPP communicator accuses government of selective justice
NPP communicator alleges selective justice, judicial interference and threats to free expression
The Navrongo Central Constituency Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jacob Asomadagwine, has accused the government of applying selective justice and using state institutions to target political opponents while shielding members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He argued that the alleged practice poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law, stressing that justice must be applied equally, regardless of political affiliation.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, August 7, Asomadagwine alleged that some former NDC government officials who faced corruption-related cases were granted favourable bail conditions or had their prosecutions discontinued before subsequently being appointed to high public offices, while former NPP officials had faced stricter bail conditions and prolonged legal proceedings.
He said the perceived disparity demonstrated what he described as selective justice within Ghana’s legal system.
“I’m talking about selective justice,” he said, insisting that justice should not depend on an individual’s political affiliation.
The NPP communicator also alleged that the judiciary was under pressure, claiming that some judges were afraid to make independent decisions because of possible repercussions from the Executive.
“Judges are now afraid to do the right thing because if you do the right thing, the Executive will come after you,” he alleged.
Asomadagwine further expressed concern over what he described as growing restrictions on freedom of expression, alleging that critics of the government were being arrested or intimidated for expressing their views.
“Under democracy, the only thing we have is our mouths and voices. We don’t have guns. We are supposed to use our mouths to criticize the President,” he stated.
He maintained that the NPP’s recent demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to what the party considers threats to democratic governance.
He called on the government to uphold judicial independence, protect freedom of expression and ensure that the law is applied equally to all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation.
