NPP communicator slams Asiedu Nketia over stance against state of emergency on Galamsey
Adams described Nketia's position as a complete U-turn from the NDC’s previous stance before the 2024 general elections.
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Francis Xavier Adams, has expressed surprise at comments by Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that declaring a state of emergency in the fight against illegal mining could endanger Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, August 29, Adams described Nketia’s position as a complete U-turn from the NDC’s previous stance before the 2024 general elections.
According to him, NDC members cannot justify the Chairman’s remarks by claiming that he spoke in his personal capacity.
“It is shocking to even hear that the party’s chairman’s comments are his personal comments and not that of the party. He is the party. In opposition, they joined demonstrations calling for a state of emergency to be declared on galamsey sites. The likes of Sam George and Ablakwa were very vocal, and even the current president, while in opposition, said President Akufo-Addo had to deal with it,” Adams stated.
He further questioned how declaring a state of emergency would endanger Ghana’s democracy, stressing that such a declaration does not equate to lawlessness.
Adams accused the NDC of deceiving Ghanaians in order to win power, only to backtrack on their promises after assuming office.
“They only deceived Ghanaians to believe that they had the Ghanaian at heart, that they felt for what Ghanaians were going through under the NPP, and that if they were given power, they were going to stop galamsey. Now, after winning power, they are claiming that declaring a state of emergency will set aside our constitution,” he added.
The debate over whether to declare a state of emergency as part of efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has resurfaced following renewed public pressure to address the menace.
