Political analyst Atura Ayam has called for an urgent constitutional review to broaden the list of officials eligible to act in the absence of the nation’s top leaders, amid rising concerns over a recent leadership vacuum.
Speaking on Mike FM’s Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, Ayam addressed the simultaneous absence of the President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament from the country, describing the situation as a glaring vulnerability in Ghana’s constitutional framework.
“In my opinion, Ghanaians have to discuss this situation. I think we should expand the persons who are supposed to be in the realms of power when those designated are not around.” Ayam stated.
He proposed that the constitution be amended to include deputy speakers of Parliament or the acting Chief Justice as potential stand-ins when the nation’s top three leaders are unavailable.
According to Ayam, this would ensure continuity of governance and prevent potential crises during periods of absence or uncertainty.
Ayam’s comments come at a time when the minority caucus in Parliament is reportedly preparing to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President. The caucus alleges a constitutional breach related to the President’s absence, which they claim has created a power vacuum.
Addressing this development, Ayam described the move as a legitimate expression of democratic checks and balances.
“The law should be expressed when people are disgruntled with such issues, like the minority is doing,” he remarked.
“It is constructive. These impeachment procedures can be initiated if they have any merit. These are opportunities for us to strengthen our constitution and create precedents for others in future.” he continued.
