Sammy Gyamfi’s ‘dollar gift’ an assault on the Ghana cedi – Nyeya Yen

Yen believes the choice of gifting money in dollars by Sammy Gyemfi gives the impression that government officials do not value the Ghana cedi.

Nyeye Yen, a social justice advocate, has described the gifting of dollar notes by Sammy Gaymfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, as an assault on the Ghana cedi.

A viral video widely shared on social media shows Sammy Gyamfi handing over dollar notes to Nana Agradaa – a gesture Gyamfi describes as an ‘unfortunate act of indiscretion’ in his apology letter after a series of backlash from a section of the Ghanaian populace.

Yen, addressing the matter on News Beat, Mike FM’s major news bulletin on Monday, May 12, said the incident is a dent on the image of Sammy Gyamfi, a person he once held high for his stance against graft and nepotism during Gyamfi’s days in opposition.

Yen believes the choice of gifting money in dollars by Sammy Gyemfi gives the impression that government officials do not value the Ghana cedi.

“Sammy Gymfi’s act is definitely an assault to our currency, moreover it gives the impression that government officials do not value our currency and only deal with dollars and other foreign currencies, and this is coming from a person who was so credible in exposing the corruption and nepotism of the erstwhile NPP government.” Yen fumed.

He argues that rather than an immediate sacking of the GoldBod CEO, he should be made to provide a credible explanation for the source of the dollar notes seen in the viral video.

“He should explain the source of the dollars that were given to Nana Agradaa, it must be a credible explanation, otherwise he (Sammy Gyamfi) will lose his credibility.”

Yen further dismissed the claims by Sammy Gyamfi in his apology letter that the gesture was an act of ‘lending a helping hand to people in need’. He questioned the criteria for categorising Nana Agradaa as needy.
