Stories of slavery should inspire cultural preservation — Pikworo Slave Camp Manager

He emphasized that recounting the experiences of enslaved Africans should not only remind people of past suffering but also strengthen their sense of identity and purpose.

The Manager of the historic Pikworo Slave Camp in Paga, Gabriel Kugoriamo, has called on Ghanaians and Africans to draw lessons from the painful history of slavery and use it as a driving force to preserve their cultural heritage.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, March 25, Kugoriamo noted that although the history of slavery evokes deep pain, it must also serve as a guide for shaping a stronger future.

He emphasized that recounting the experiences of enslaved Africans should not only remind people of past suffering but also strengthen their sense of identity and purpose.

“Such stories create awareness of where we come from, who we are today, and where we are heading. They give us the zeal to protect our culture and preserve our heritage.” he said.

Kugoriamo further urged Africans to remain united in the face of negative perceptions about the continent, particularly narratives that portray Africa as an undesirable place.

According to him, these portrayals should rather inspire a collective resolve among Africans to defend their dignity and promote a positive image of the continent.

Touching on the long-term impact of slavery, he acknowledged the enduring harm caused to African societies and stressed the importance of ongoing conversations around reparations.

“As Ghanaians and Africans, we have come to realize the extent of the damage slavery has caused. The call for reparations is necessary and timely, and it is not too late to pursue justice.” He added
