Tangoba admonishes women in politics to break the glass ceiling despite the challenges faced

She urged women to remain resilient and pursue leadership roles despite cultural and systemic barriers within the political space.

Former Upper East Regional Minister and former Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy, Tangoba Abayage, has encouraged women aspiring to enter politics to remain resilient in the face of challenges within Ghana’s political landscape.

Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM on Saturday, April 18, Abayage emphasized the significant contributions women can make in governance and public service.

“There is so much impact that women bring on board that can better shape Ghana’s political landscape, but many are hesitant to step forward due to the challenges involved.” She stated.

Abayage noted that although women bring diversity, competence, and innovation into leadership, many capable individuals shy away from politics because of systemic and cultural barriers.

“It is challenging when women step into the public space, not just in politics. Our cultural norms often position women as subordinate to men. The moment a woman breaks the glass ceiling into male-dominated spaces, scrutiny intensifies, and in many cases, the challenges begin even from the home.” She explained.

Reflecting on her personal journey, Tangoba revealed that growing up in conditions of extreme poverty exposed her to ridicule and bullying, experiences that ultimately shaped her resilience and leadership style.

“I had to toughen up to overcome the bullying. At a point, I adopted a very bold and assertive demeanor, which helped me build the strength and determination needed to succeed.” She recounted.

She added that leadership becomes fulfilling when driven by a genuine desire to serve, noting that her passion for leadership was nurtured during her time in student politics.

Tangoba concluded by urging women to rise above societal limitations and actively pursue leadership roles to contribute meaningfully to national development.
