Unionised staff of GBC call for removal of Professor Amin Alhassan as General Manager
The workers levelled a series of allegations against Professor Alhassan, accusing him of mismanagement, financial impropriety, neglect of staff welfare, and abandoning the state broadcaster’s core mandate.
Unionised staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have declared the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, persona non grata and are calling for his immediate removal from office.
At a durbar held in Accra on August 28, the workers levelled a series of allegations against Professor Alhassan, accusing him of mismanagement, financial impropriety, neglect of staff welfare, and abandoning the state broadcaster’s core mandate.
The workers also raised questions about the Director-General’s continued stay in office despite the reported expiration of his contract in 2023.
Divisional Union Chairman, Sam Nat Kevor, who addressed the durbar on behalf of the staff, reiterated the union’s demand for Professor Alhassan’s removal, warning that any further delay could cripple the already struggling broadcaster.
In response to a media interview on August 29, Professor Amin Alhassan strongly rejected the allegations, insisting that the attacks are motivated by his strict enforcement of rules and discipline within the corporation.
“Their problem is simply, as the editor-general of GBC, I have told them, government policy will be implemented when it comes to human resource management fully, and we are strictly abiding by it. The union is unhappy about it. Of course, there are a few, a good number who are unhappy.” He said
The standoff between the unionised staff and the Director-General adds to the mounting challenges confronting Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, raising questions about the future direction of the country’s foremost state-owned media organisation.
