UTAS Lecturer urges mentorship for women to achieve their dreams and contribute to community dev’t
Women encouraged to rise above challenges and pursue leadership opportunities
Dr Mary-Magdalene Pedavoah, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Applied Chemistry under the School of Chemical and Biochemical Sciences at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), has called for deliberate and strategic mentorship for women and young girls to empower them to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to community and national development.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 12, Dr Pedavoah stressed the need for intentional advocacy aimed at promoting the growth, empowerment, and inclusion of women in decision-making spaces.
According to her, women continue to face barriers in leadership and professional advancement because many of the platforms where critical decisions are made are predominantly occupied by men.
“We need advocates because in some of the rooms where decisions are made for women to take up space, mostly it is the men who are there, and so if they do not advocate for us there, we will remain where we are,” she stated.
Dr Pedavoah further encouraged women who have attained success in their various fields to mentor and support younger women in order to help them rise and achieve their full potential.
She acknowledged that women often encounter numerous obstacles, including cultural limitations, family pressures, and societal expectations, but urged them not to allow such challenges to discourage them from pursuing their ambitions.
“Women should realise that challenges will come, but what will make you succeed is your mindset. If you are prepared and opportunity meets you, you will succeed,” she added.
