Remembrance Day: Upper East Regional Minister calls for better support for veterans

Speaking at the 80th Remembrance Day Parade held at the Veterans Administration Ghana (VAG) Cenotaph in Bolgatanga on Tuesday November 11, Atanga underscored the vital role of veterans in safeguarding Ghana’s sovereignty and contributing to global peacekeeping missions.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has called for renewed national commitment to the welfare of Ghana’s veterans while cautioning against emerging security threats in the region.

He said the sacrifices of both fallen and living ex-service personnel demand sustained national responsibility, particularly in areas of healthcare, housing, and livelihood support.

“Under President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda, the NDC government remains committed to strengthening support systems for our veterans and ensuring that their welfare is prioritized.”

Atanga also expressed concern about the increasing security challenges in the Upper East Region, citing recurring chieftaincy and land disputes, as well as potential threats of terrorism and violent extremism from neighbouring countries. He called for stronger collaboration among security agencies to safeguard peace and stability in the area.

He commended the security personnel, especially those deployed in Bawku, for their continued sacrifices and dedication in maintaining law and order under difficult conditions.

The Minister further urged the youth to emulate the discipline, patriotism, and sense of duty exemplified by Ghana’s veterans, stressing that nation-building is a continuous responsibility, not one limited to wartime service.

He assured veterans that the government recognizes their sacrifices and remains committed to improving their welfare.

“The legacy of our veterans will continue to guide our efforts toward peace, unity, and national prosperity,” he added.

The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths and moments of silence in honour of the country’s fallen heroes.
