Yendi: Parliamentary Select Committee commends First Sky Limited for solely executing Solar Plant project

Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines praises First Sky Limited for completing the $59 million Galgu solar plant using Ghanaian expertise, as lawmakers call for more solar investments in northern Ghana.

Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines have commended First Sky Limited for undertaking the construction of a 50-megawatt peak (MWp) solar power plant at Galgu in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region using Ghanaian expertise.

The wholly Ghanaian-owned construction company, deployed its engineers to undertake the planning, installation and construction of the facility without foreign technical support.

The $59-million facility, owned by the Bui Power Authority (BPA), has been completed, tested and connected to the national grid.

The project is expected to improve electricity supply in Yendi and communities along the Eastern Corridor, while easing pressure on existing transmission infrastructure and helping to minimise power outages and voltage fluctuations.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines, which visited the facility on Monday to inspect the project and assess its operational status, expressed satisfaction with the work undertaken by the company.

The Chairman of the committee, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, commended First Sky Limited for demonstrating that indigenous companies had the capacity to execute major energy infrastructure projects.

“I did not know that an indigenous Ghanaian company had the capacity to execute such a project, i am really impressed” he stated.

The Ranking Member of the committee, George Kwame Aboagye, called for the development of more solar power plants in the northern part of the country to take advantage of the region’s abundant solar resources.

He said increased investment in solar energy would diversify Ghana’s energy mix and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable electricity sector.

The Director of the Engineering Department of the BPA, Peter Acheampong, said the plant would add power to the national grid and help improve electricity supply.

The Chairman of the Project Implementation Committee of First Sky Limited, Charles Gidi, said the company completed construction of the Galgu plant in September this year, after which the facility underwent testing before being connected to the national grid.

He added that the company remained committed to delivering infrastructure that met the required technical and operational standards.
