A health practitioner in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality has encouraged young people not to shy away from seeking accurate information about contraceptives, stressing that informed choices are key to their sexual and reproductive health.
Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM on Saturday September 21, 2025, Gregory Akanperige described the use of contraceptives such as condoms as both responsible and smart.
“Contraceptives are not just about preventing pregnancy, they are about safeguarding your future. The talk of contraceptives is something usually whispered about, yet accurate knowledge on it arms one with knowledge to be able to make good choices regarding their sexual life.” He said.
Akanperige cautioned that emergency contraceptives are meant strictly for emergency cases such as unprotected intercourse, warning against frequent use due to possible side effects. He noted that they are most effective when taken within 72 hours.
He highlighted that contraceptive services are available at hospitals, CHPS compounds, and health centres, often at no cost or for a minimal fee. He also pointed out that health facilities have designated Adolescent Corners, where young people can seek confidential support without fear of stigma or judgment.
Akanperige revealed that while teenage pregnancies are gradually declining in the municipality, cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise. He stressed that contraceptives do not protect against STIs, underscoring the importance of safe practices.
He called on parents, guardians, and institutions to take an active role in educating young people about contraceptives to help them make informed and healthier life choices.
