‘Ghana Drunkards Association’ appeals for reflector jackets, helmets for members to ensure safety at night
Onyah, also took the opportunity to clarify misconceptions about the association’s legitimacy, stressing that the Ghana Drunkards Association is a legally registered body operating under the Beverages and Bar Owners Association of Ghana
President of the Ghana Drunkards Association, Moses Onyah, has appealed to the government and corporate bodies to provide protective gear, including reflector jackets and helmets, for its members across the country to ensure their safety, especially during nighttime activities.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday November 6, Onyah emphasized that reflector jackets and helmets would help prevent accidents and protect the lives of members.
“We are appealing to the president to support us with reflectors and helmets so that most of our members who will be working at night, crossing roads to go and drink when oncoming or ongoing vehicles coming will know there’s a human being crossing the road with a reflector and helmet, so that it will slow down for them.”
Onyah, also took the opportunity to clarify misconceptions about the association’s legitimacy, stressing that the Ghana Drunkards Association is a legally registered body operating under the Beverages and Bar Owners Association of Ghana.
“We are known and registered as beverage consumers and bar owners of Ghana, which is popularly known in the media as the drunkards association. Our aim is to ensure that beverages that come into the market are of high quality and safe for human consumption, we create a peaceful and enabling environment for consumers to sit and enjoy their beverages.”
He made the clarification following public discussions surrounding the association’s recent announcement of a one-week break from alcohol consumption, which some Ghanaians dismissed as a publicity stunt.
Onyah explained that the temporary break was introduced to promote discipline, self-control, and good health among its over 16.7 million registered members nationwide.
According to him, the initiative also forms part of the association’s broader campaign to encourage responsible drinking and healthy lifestyles among its members.
“Leaders of the association realise that there’s a need for us to go on a break to ensure that our members are medically fit, and then to also to allow them to reflect on the lives of those who are past and gone, and also use this opportunity to educate them ahead of the festive season that is coming.”
Onyah further warned that any member who fails to comply with the one-week abstinence directive will face disciplinary action, including suspension from the association.
