Plans underway for new medical school at CKT-UTAS to boost regional healthcare

Atanga attributed the persistent staffing challenges in the region to a reluctance among health workers to accept postings there, often due to security concerns and limited career development opportunities.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the region by supporting the establishment of a medical school.

During a working visit to the Upper East Regional Hospital on Thursday, June 12, the Minister revealed that discussions are underway with the Vice Chancellor of the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) to initiate plans for a medical school at the university.

This, according to the Minister aims to address the region’s chronic shortage of healthcare professionals.

Atanga attributed the persistent staffing challenges in the region to a reluctance among health workers to accept postings there, often due to security concerns and limited career development opportunities.

“If we tackle these issues by establishing a training centre—like a medical school—right here in the region, and train people who are raised here, they are more likely to stay and serve. It will help shift the mindset,” he stated.

He further emphasised that, in addition to developing local human resources, the medical school would attract healthcare investments and create a more sustainable and resilient health system in the Upper East Region.
