Peter Ayinbisa rates government’s fight against galamsey 2 out of 10

Ayinbisa argued that the Mahama-led government has failed to show a genuine commitment to fighting galamsay against some of the promises they made in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.

The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, has strongly criticised the Mahama administration’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, describing its performance as abysmal.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday November 7, Ayinbisa said the government’s effort to curb the menace of illegal mining has failed to yield tangible results, rating it 2 out of 10.

He noted that the erstwhile Akuffo-Addo administration did well in the fight against galamsay, leading to the party losing several seats in the 2020 election.

Ayinbisa argued that the Mahama-led government has failed to show a genuine commitment to fighting galamsay against some of the promises they made in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.

“I’ll give them two percent, it is abysmal. This government, when they were in opposition, told us that when they come to power, they were going to repeal the LI-2462.”

“They are in their tenth month, and we are now learning that the draft of the repeal of the law has been processed. They told us that it is easy to declare a state of emergency and that when they come, they’ll declare a state of emergency. As we speak now, they are dragging their feet.”

Ayinbisa called on President Mahama to declare a state of emergency in mining areas and immediately repeal LI 2462.

He noted that though galamsay cannot be stopped immediately, there is a need to see positive indications of water bodies getting clearer, and warned that the health implications of the galamsay menace is worsening.

Touching on the economy, the former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo accused the government of artificially stabilizing the cedi against the dollar, saying the exchange rate performance does not reflect the true state of the economy.

He claimed that the government’s fiscal policies are unsustainable and that ordinary Ghanaians are still grappling with the high cost of living, despite assurances of economic recovery.

“When we told them they were cutting money because they were pumping dollars into the system, they said we’re lying. IMF came and told them that if you don’t stop pumping money and printing money and pumping dollars into the system, you’ll run into trouble. But even with the dollars trading today at less than eleven cedi, can you find a dollar?”  He added.
