Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly sets up special taskforce to decongest Central Business District
The initiative, aimed at improving public safety and ensuring the free flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, follows a consultative meeting with traders, market leaders, and other key stakeholders at the Assembly.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Navrongo Traditional Council has constituted a special taskforce to address congestion within the municipality’s central business district.
The initiative, aimed at improving public safety and ensuring the free flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, follows a consultative meeting with traders, market leaders, and other key stakeholders at the Assembly.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, March 4, the Secretary to the Navro Pio and Chairman of the taskforce, Felix Kondayire, explained the rationale behind the exercise.
“This exercise is being carried out in close collaboration with the Navrongo Municipal Assembly and in consultation with the revered Navro Pio. Together, we have agreed on practical measures to restore order, improve safety and ensure free movement within the central business area,” he stated.
Kondayire noted that consensus was reached during the stakeholder engagement on the modalities for the operation, including sanctions for non-compliance. He urged business operators and transporters to adhere strictly to the agreed guidelines.
Also speaking on the programme, the Head of the Physical Planning Department at the Assembly and a member of the taskforce, Patrick Kweku Awuni, outlined the areas targeted for the decongestion exercise.
According to him, the operation will focus on the Navrongo Central Business District, the main road towards the municipal hospital, the Cinema Place Road, the New Market area, Pungu Road, and the Navrongo, Bolgatanga highway.
He explained that the exercise will involve the removal of unauthorized structures extending onto road shoulders, clearing traders operating along roadways, and preventing the indiscriminate parking, loading, and offloading of goods on the streets.

Awuni further detailed the penalties for offenders. Tricycle riders found parking on unauthorized sections of the road will be fined between GH¢50 and GH¢100. Private car and taxi drivers will face fines ranging from GH¢100 to GH¢200, while drivers of long trucks could be penalized between GH¢500 and GH¢1,500.
The Assistant Municipal Director, Joseph Tambeog, also appealed to residents to support the initiative, describing it as a necessary step in the broader interest of the municipality.
“The stretch from the Ghana Commercial Bank towards the hospital is extremely congested, especially on market days. In the event of an emergency, access becomes a major challenge. This exercise is not intended to take away anyone’s livelihood but to ensure safety and order for the benefit of all,” he said.

He assured residents that the Assembly remains committed to its mandate of serving the people and called for collective cooperation to make the exercise successful.
