NPP Communicator questions exemptions in NDC resignation directive

Asomadawine calls for equal application of rules, questions exclusion of board members and chairpersons

Navrongo Central Constituency Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jacob Asomadawine, has criticised aspects of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) directive requiring certain government appointees to resign before contesting internal party positions.

Asomadawine argued that the directive appears inconsistent because while it applies to some categories of appointees, others have been exempted.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, June 5, he reacted to the NDC’s decision requiring ministers, deputy ministers, chief executive officers and other government appointees seeking party executive positions to step down from their appointments before contesting.

According to him, comments made by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, suggest that the directive does not apply to board members and board chairpersons.

“The chairman of their party carefully indicated that it will affect CEOs, ministers and their deputies, and said the exemptions are that it will not affect board members and board chairmen,” Asomadawine stated.

He questioned the rationale behind the exemptions, arguing that board members and board chairpersons occupy influential positions and play critical roles in the governance of state institutions.

“Those who are supposed to do the thinking of the organisations, he left them out and exempted the board chairmen because he himself is a board chairman,” he alleged.

Asomadawine maintained that if the objective of the directive is to ensure fairness and prevent the abuse of office, then the policy should be applied uniformly to all political appointees.

He argued that exempting some office holders while imposing restrictions on others could create perceptions of unfairness and undermine confidence in the party’s internal electoral process.

The NPP communicator called on the NDC leadership to provide further clarification on the exemptions and ensure that all aspirants are subjected to the same rules ahead of the party’s internal elections
