Former NPP Chairman Afoko seeks return to leadership, pledges to restore party unity

Former NPP National Chairman says unity, inclusion and grassroots engagement are essential to rebuilding the party and reclaiming power in future elections.

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko has announced his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman ahead of the party’s next National Delegates Conference.

Afoko made the declaration during a meeting with NPP constituency executives and party representatives from the Upper East Region held at Bolgatanga on Tuesday, June 23.

Addressing the gathering, he appealed to party members to support his bid, stressing that the NPP requires leadership that prioritizes the welfare and collective interests of the party rather than the ambitions of a select few.

According to him, the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections was partly due to widespread dissatisfaction among grassroots supporters who felt neglected after the party assumed power.

“If you elect a chairman and general secretary who go into office thinking only about themselves and their immediate associates, rather than the welfare of the party as a whole, we will find ourselves in the same situation we experienced in the last elections,” he stated.

Afoko argued that many NPP supporters did not abandon the party for its political opponents but instead chose to stay away from the polls because they felt excluded from the benefits of governance.

“It is not that our people left us and voted for another party. Many of them simply stayed at home and refused to vote,” he said.

He therefore urged party members to put aside personal differences and unite behind a common objective of rebuilding the NPP and returning it to power, emphasizing that unity remains the party’s greatest asset.

“We need to remain focused. If you do not like this person or that person, please forget it. What we need is power,” he urged.

The former chairman further described political power as something that demands sacrifice, discipline and collective effort, stressing that the party must work together if it hopes to regain government.

“Power has no brother. Power has no sister. Power has no uncle. Power has no feelings. Power is just power. Do what power demands, and you will get power,” he emphasized.

Afoko pledged to continue engaging party members across the country in the coming months as part of his campaign and appealed for their support and prayers.

“I offer myself to you as your father, uncle and brother. The path to power is before us. Support me and help us return our party to government,” he appealed.

He concluded by calling on members to remain committed to the party’s rebuilding efforts and to pray for its leadership as it prepares for future electoral contests.
