Former Ghana U-20 midfielder David Atanga switches nationality to Burkina Faso

Bongo Namoo-born midfielder completes FIFA-approved switch and is now eligible to represent Burkina Faso's senior national team after previously featuring for Ghana at youth level.

Ghanaian-born midfielder David Atanga has officially completed his nationality switch from Ghana to Burkina Faso, making him eligible to represent the Stallions at senior international level.

The Wolfsberger AC midfielder, who hails from Bongo Namoo in Ghana’s Upper East Region, never earned a senior cap for the Black Stars despite representing Ghana at youth level.

Atanga developed through the renowned Red Bull Ghana Academy, which has produced several top Ghanaian footballers, before moving to Austria to join FC Liefering, the feeder club of Red Bull Salzburg.

He was a member of Ghana’s squad at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, where he played alongside Lawrence Ati Zigi, Godfred Donsah, Clifford Aboagye, Samuel Tetteh, Joseph Aidoo, and other talented players.

Although born in Ghana to a Ghanaian mother, Atanga qualified to represent Burkina Faso through his Burkinabè father.

After holding discussions with officials of the Burkinabè Football Federation in Ouagadougou a few weeks ago, the nationality switch has now been completed.

The move makes the 28-year-old available for selection by Burkina Faso for the upcoming international window, marking a new chapter in his international football career.
