Wontumi withdraws from NPP National Chairman race
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says he is withdrawing from the NPP National Chairmanship race after consultations with his family, legal team, party elders and supporters.
Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has announced his decision to withdraw from the race for the party’s National Chairmanship position.
In a statement dated August 24, Boasiako said the decision followed “many nights of prayer, sober reflection” and consultations with his family, legal team, party elders, campaign team and trusted supporters.
He explained that his decision was motivated by a desire not to allow his personal circumstances to become an additional burden on the NPP as the party works to rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“There are moments in the life of a man when the heart wants to continue, but duty demands sacrifice,” he said, adding that sometimes “true love requires us to release what we deeply want in order to protect what we love even more.”
Boasiako said he had served the NPP for many years, travelling across the country and supporting the party’s grassroots in both victory and defeat.
He described the NPP as more than a political party to him, saying it was his “family,” “home” and a cause to which he had dedicated a significant part of his life.
He said he could not allow his present situation or personal ambition to distract the party from the task of rebuilding and preparing for the next political contest.
“I would rather carry this pain quietly than allow the party I love to suffer because of me,” he stated.
The former NPP National Chairman aspirant also expressed appreciation to his supporters across all 16 regions, acknowledging the sacrifices they had made throughout his campaign.
His decision is expected to reshape the contest for the NPP National Chairmanship as the party prepares for its national officers elections.
