NDC has not demonstrated strong commitment to tackling unemployment — NPP Communicator
Akunyire also criticised the NDC’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, which he said was projected as a major job-creation strategy during the campaign period.
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Maxwell Akunyire, has questioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment since assuming office.
Akunyire’s comments follow the release of a survey by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), which rated President John Dramani Mahama’s performance at 68 per cent.
The survey also indicated that 46 per cent of respondents identified unemployment as a major concern.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, February 16, Akunyire argued that the unemployment situation on the ground may be more severe than reflected in the survey findings.
“That figure is even low because the NDC government has not instituted a clear programme aimed at recruiting people to reduce the unemployment rate,” he said.
He further alleged that some public sector workers engaged under the previous administration faced challenges after the change in government.
“Even some regular teachers and nurses employed under the previous regime had their engagements suspended before they were later reinstated. Some of them are yet to receive their full salaries,” he claimed.
Akunyire also criticised the NDC’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, which he said was projected as a major job-creation strategy during the campaign period. According to him, the policy has yet to translate into tangible employment opportunities.
“The jobs promised under their 24-hour economy, which was supposed to employ people to run three shifts for the same job, are still being discussed on social media. On the ground, nothing significant is happening,” he asserted.
He called on the government to outline concrete measures and timelines aimed at addressing youth unemployment and improving livelihoods across the country.
