Allegations of planned rigging in NPP primaries are defeatist tactics – Thomas Kwalase
According to him, the claims are a pre-emptive strategy to explain a possible loss at the primaries rather than a reflection of any flaws in the party’s internal electoral processes.
The Chiana-Paga Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Thomas Kwalase, has dismissed allegations of a plot to rig the party’s upcoming primary elections, describing them as defeatist tactics by elements within the campaign team of one of the aspirants.
According to him, the claims are a pre-emptive strategy to explain a possible loss at the primaries rather than a reflection of any flaws in the party’s internal electoral processes.
Kwalase’s comments follow the NPP’s decision to refer the allegations, along with videos circulating on social media making similar claims, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for a thorough investigation.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, January 9, Kawase maintained that the party’s internal electoral processes are transparent, clear, and secure enough to prevent any form of manipulation.
“We have an electoral register which is displayed and exhibited. All coordinators of the aspirants can access and scrutinize the register through the various constituency offices of the party. In fact, they even have copies of the register, so if anyone is alleging a plot to rig the election in favour of a particular aspirant, I don’t think that holds water.”
He stressed that the NPP, as an institution, is larger than any individual and would not allow its internal democratic processes to be compromised by such allegations.
“When you are being carried away by water, any straw you see, you try to hold on to to save your life. That is what I am seeing here: these are defeatist tactics.”
Kwalase welcomed the party’s decision to refer the matter to the CID, saying it demonstrates the NPP’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He further urged party supporters to remain calm and not be swayed by what he described as unsubstantiated claims.
