Corruption remains a canker that violates human rights – KNMA CHRAJ
The municipal CHRAJ office says corruption undermines fundamental human rights and is urging citizens to use tools like the Whistleblower Act to report wrongdoing.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has expressed concern that corruption continues to be a major contributor to the violation of the fundamental human rights of citizens.
The Municipal Director of CHRAJ, Isshaku Abdul Gafaru, speaking on Mike FM’s Big Mike Breakfast Show on April 21, described corruption as a canker with no redeeming qualities.
“Corruption is a canker. We all know it. There is nothing good about corruption at all; there is no iota of good or positivity that can be traced to any act of corruption. It violates fundamental human rights through administrative injustice.” He stated.
He highlighted how some public officers abuse their positions by demanding bribes before delivering services citizens are constitutionally entitled to receive.
Abdul-Gafaru noted that CHRAJ, through the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP), continues to actively advocate against all forms of corruption.
He explained that the 10-year National Anti-Corruption Action Plan was developed through extensive stakeholder engagement, bringing together various groups to design strategies to combat corruption in the country.
“NACAP is a document that guides Ghana in the fight against corruption.” He said.
Abdul-Gafaru also identified the Whistleblower Act as one of the key avenues available to citizens to report acts of corruption in their communities.
“With the Whistleblower Act, individuals can report any impropriety in society or within their communities without their identities being disclosed to perpetrators, thereby protecting them from harm,”
“The whistleblower system is a vital tool in the fight against corruption, and you do not need to be a special person to report wrongdoing in society.” He added.
