Dr Joshua Akuu urges Ghanaian youth to build sustainable lives at home instead of seeking “greener pastures” abroad

Life abroad is not always better — Dr. Joshua Akuu cautions youth

Dr. Joshua Akuu, the Western Sydney Organizer for the Australia/New Zealand Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged Ghanaian youth to focus on building sustainable lives in Ghana rather than constantly seeking greener pastures abroad.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, May 11, Dr. Akuu cautioned against the widespread perception that life abroad is automatically better, stressing that such assumptions can be misleading to many young people.

“If you have a stable job in Ghana, a decent place to lay your head, and food on your table, stay in the country,” he advised.

According to him, living abroad comes with enormous financial and emotional pressures that many people back home often do not see.

“There are people living in Ghana who earn more money and live more comfortably than some people abroad. Abroad, you make money and spend it on airtime, electricity, data, transportation, rent, and many other expenses. You have to work extremely hard just to survive,” he stated.

Dr. Akuu further called for greater investment in and empowerment of Ghana’s private sector to create more employment opportunities for the teeming youth seeking jobs and better livelihoods.

He emphasized that creating sustainable economic opportunities locally would help reduce the growing desire among young people to migrate in search of better living conditions.
