He urged families not to abandon loved ones battling addiction, but to show them love, empathy, and seek the necessary support for their recovery.

“People in addiction need to first accept that they need help and trust in a higher power to turn their lives around.” He added.

Robert Ayisiyiga, an educationist who spoke on the show also highlighted some of the commonly abused substances among the youth, including alcohol, marijuana, painkillers, snuff, shisha, and even substances like super glue and bicycle solution.

Ayisiyiga said curiosity, unregulated drug sales, and the desire for heightened pleasure are major drivers of the trend.

“Excuse my language, but sexual satisfaction is one major reason behind substance abuse. The enticing social media adverts make many young people want to try and see for themselves.” He stated.

He cautioned that drug abuse poses serious health and financial risks, contributes to road accidents, and leads to premature deaths.
