Teachers in Ghana’s Colleges of Education are expected to return to the classroom following the government’s announcement that funds for the payment of book and research allowances for the 2023 and 2024 academic years is been processed.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that a total of GH¢41 million is being processed by the government through the Ministry of Finance for the payment of the allowances.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed this during the 14th graduation ceremony of St. John Bosco College of Education in Navrongo on January 31.
“I am aware that government is currently processing, through the Ministry of Finance, the release of GH¢41 million for the payment of your book and research allowances for 2023 and 2024,” the Minister stated.
Iddrisu used the occasion to appeal to striking teachers to call off their industrial action and return to work, noting that the concerns that triggered the strike had been addressed.
“Let me use this opportunity to urge you to call off the strike. If the basis of your strike was the non-payment of book and research allowances for 2023 and 2024, that has been processed. It is now between the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and your bank accounts.” He said.
He further questioned the continued withdrawal of teaching services, stressing the impact on students.
“Why should young learners be held to ransom?” the Minister asked.
According to him, the government’s commitment should pave the way for the immediate resumption of academic activities across all Colleges of Education.
“I expect that by February 9, normal academic work should be fully restored in all Colleges of Education throughout the country.” Iddrisu added.
The strike by Colleges of Education Teachers began on November 24, 2025 after the government failed to fully implement the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) May 2023 arbitral award.
