The Kassena Nankana Municipality on Friday, March 6, commemorated Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary with a parade at the COS Park in Navrongo, bringing together students, public officials and community members to celebrate the nation’s progress and reflect on the path ahead.

The event featured marching displays from about ten basic schools and one senior high school, alongside the participation of Heads of Departments, staff of the Municipal Assembly, political figures and other residents who gathered to mark the historic occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Faustina Akeyom Abulu, welcomed participants and congratulated citizens on the milestone.

She said the celebration provided an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s journey and honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers.

“On behalf of the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, and the Government of Ghana, I congratulate you on this occasion of our 69th Independence Day celebration. We must use this day to remind ourselves of the sacrifices made by our founding fathers who laid the foundation for the nation we have today.” She stated.

Abulu noted that the progress made by the country over the years has been the result of collective effort and urged residents to continue contributing towards the development of the municipality while the government delivers on its mandate.

She highlighted several policy initiatives of the government, including the 24-hour economy, stress-free tertiary education fees and the Mahama Cares programme, describing them as key interventions aimed at transforming the country and improving livelihoods.

The Municipal Director of Education, Thomas Kanlisi, used the occasion to call for discipline among learners and urged parents to support teachers in maintaining a conducive learning environment in schools.

He expressed concern about growing cases of indiscipline in schools and cautioned parents against actions that create tension within educational institutions.

“Indiscipline has become a worrying trend in some of our schools. Instead of supporting effective teaching and learning, some parents unfortunately resort to attacking teachers physically or spiritually.” he said.
