NDC Communicator defends President Mahama’s extension of IGP Yohuno’s tenure
According to him, the security sector should be insulated from partisan politics, emphasizing that Yohuno’s short but impactful tenure justified continuity.
Godfred Apolala, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, has justified President John Mahama’s decision to grant a two-year contract extension to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, November 28, Apolala said the extension, granted upon the recommendation of the Police Council, was in the best interest of national security, given the “transformative initiatives” the IGP has introduced since assuming office.
According to him, the security sector should be insulated from partisan politics, emphasizing that Yohuno’s short but impactful tenure justified continuity.
“The security services are a critical area that we must always prioritize and avoid politicizing. The IGP has been in office for barely eight months, yet he has introduced reforms aimed at strengthening the service. That is why personnel of the Police Service jubilated when he was appointed. If you remove someone who is driving such reforms midway, you risk collapsing the sector.” He stated.
Apolala argued that the IGP’s role is too sensitive to be disrupted for political convenience and cautioned the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) against exploiting the extension for partisan gain.
He also addressed concerns about the government’s earlier directive suspending post-retirement contracts for public servants. According to him, the April 2 letter issued by the Executive Secretary to the President did not imply a permanent ban.
“The letter indicated a suspension, not a cancellation. Suspension means something temporary that can be lifted at any time. So, when a letter states that post-retirement contracts are suspended, does that suggest permanence?” He queried.
Apolala maintained that the President acted within the law and in the interest of national stability by extending IGP Yohuno’s service.
