NPP should apologise to Ghanaians over anti-LGBTQ bill – Asurayaga

She argues that the NPP lacks the moral authority to demand an apology, accusing the party of failing to assent to the bill during its eight years in power and politicising the issue for advantage.

Angelina Asurayaga, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, has criticised the Minority caucus in Parliament for calling on President John Dramani Mahama to apologise over delays in addressing LGBTQ-related legislation.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 8, Asurayaga described the Minority’s demand as politically motivated and lacking moral justification.

According to her, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not have the credibility to demand accountability on the matter, having failed to assent to the bill during its eight years in government.

“A party that was in power for eight years and refused to assent to the bill, even after it was passed, cannot now argue that a president who has been in office for less than two years should be condemned for not prioritising the issue.” She stated.

Asurayaga further accused the NPP of attempting to exploit the issue for political gain, insisting that such efforts would not resonate with Ghanaians.

She also clarified recent remarks by President Mahama suggesting that the LGBTQ bill is not an immediate priority, explaining that this should not be interpreted as a refusal to address the matter.

“What the president said does not necessarily mean the issue will not be tackled. It simply means there are more pressing concerns at the moment, and this can be considered at a later time.” She added.
