Korania residents battle annual road floods, appeal to KNMA for urgent action
Each rainy season, an adjacent dam overflows, spilling water onto the main route and leaving commuters, schoolchildren and traders stranded.
For years, residents of Korania in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality have endured annual floods that cut off their only access road to the rest of the municipality. Each rainy season, an adjacent dam overflows, spilling water onto the main route and leaving commuters, schoolchildren and traders stranded.
This recurring challenge prompted the establishment of the Kurise-Binania Youth Association in 2016, a local group established to address pressing problems in Korania and nearby communities. Since then, the association has been at the forefront of mobilising volunteers to clear vegetation and desilt the small culvert along the flooded road in an effort to keep it passable.
Chairman of the Kurise-Binania Youth Association, Isaac Damyoma, told Mike FM that the problem affects every facet of life in Korania
“This road is the major entry road to Korania. During the rainy season, it becomes difficult for us to go to town, for our children to go to school, and for our mothers and wives to go to market simply because the road is not in good condition.” He lamented
Damyoma further revealed that the community has repeatedly raised the issue with the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly without success.
“For previous assemblymen, every year we invited them; they came, gave us little support and took our concerns to the Assembly. But up to date, nothing has been done.” He revealed.

Adding his voice, the Chief of Korania, John Tiburu, appealed to the Municipal Assembly to come to the aid of the community.
“We even requested that even if they give us their trucks or a tractor or anything so that we use the youth, we find our own gravel somewhere else to come and then refill the places to make it motorable. So we are still waiting on the assembly. We’ve been talking to them always.”
The community emphasised the need for the intervention of the government through the district assembly.
